Since the Second World War, new towns and cities have grown up all over Europe to meet rapidly growing population needs. GEDUM - Promotion of a sustainable and integrated urban solid waste management system in the Maghreb countries
Location of Activities: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia,
Sector: Solid Waste Management
Lead Partner: Municipality of Reus (Spain) Contact: Ramon CASTELLVÍ ANDREU - email: rcastellvi@reus.cat

This project aims to improve the management of solid waste in several South Mediterranean municipalities. Despite numerous efforts to improve the management of solid waste disposal, problems still persist which are similar to those experienced in the north Mediterranean countries over the past 30 years. Many of the approaches applied in South Mediterranean municipalities have not yielded effective results due to the lack of managerial capacities and trained staff, and to the application of measures that were not adapted to the specific conditions of the Maghreb countries.
