ArcHeritage Location of Activities: Russian Federation, Tunisia,
Theme: Good Governance and Urban Development Policy Sector: Cultural Heritage Lead Partner:
Province of Cagliari (Italy);
Contact: Gianpietro COMANDINI - email: gcomandini@provincia.cagliari.it
Cultural tourism is significantly more environmentally friendly than traditional mass tourism and can play an important role in the economy of the countries and regions involved in the project. These are the Province of Cagliari in Sardinia; Hunedoara County in Romania; Cape Bon in Tunisia, and Krasnodar Region, Temryuk in the Russian Federation. All four share a common history and cultural heritage that reaches back to their longstanding experience of life under Roman Empire rule. |

Both Yerevan and Mahdia enjoy some renown for their sporting and leisure activities. Yerevan has a number of football clubs and is also famous for its chess players, while Mahdia is strong in handball. Nonetheless, neither city has sufficient sports and recreational facilities to satisfy the needs of its populations. Exacerbating this problem is the fact that many of the available facilities are not open and accessible to all. |
TourMedEau: Sustainable water management in the Mediterranean tourist areas Location of Activities: Morocco, Tunisia,
Theme: Environmental Sustainability Sector: Water and Wastewater Lead Partner:
Municipality of Villasimius (Italy);
Contact: Salvatore SANNA - email: torsanna@tiscali.it
There is a general lack of dialogue between the authorities on both sides of the Mediterranean to address the issue of sustainable water management. This challenge is particularly intense in the tourism and industry sectors. Establishing sustainable water management and distribution solutions in industrial regions can be addressed through implementation and enforcement of internationally recognized norms and standards. The problems caused by tourists are more complex, however, due to the lack of compatible and sustainable water management systems to handle over consumption. |
GODEM - Optimised Management of Waste in the Mediterranean Location of Activities: Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia,
Theme: Environmental Sustainability Sector: Solid Waste Management Lead Partner:
Capital Region of Brussels / ACR+
Contact: Barbara DEWULF - email: bde@ibgebim.be
Not only does the average person in the EU produce twice as much waste as their southern neighbours, but in the south almost twice as much of the waste produced is organic. In general, however, on both sides of the Mediterranean, the quantity and changing composition of waste is making it urgent to find sustainable methods of waste disposal. Of particular concern in the South is the fact that waste is mainly thrown away in an uncontrolled manner, with only 5% being recycled. |
GEDUM - Promotion of a sustainable and integrated urban solid waste management system in the Maghreb countries Location of Activities: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia,
Sector: Solid Waste Management Lead Partner:
Municipality of Reus (Spain)
Contact: Ramon CASTELLVÍ ANDREU - email: rcastellvi@reus.cat
This project aims to improve the management of solid waste in several South Mediterranean municipalities. Despite numerous efforts to improve the management of solid waste disposal, problems still persist which are similar to those experienced in the north Mediterranean countries over the past 30 years. Many of the approaches applied in South Mediterranean municipalities have not yielded effective results due to the lack of managerial capacities and trained staff, and to the application of measures that were not adapted to the specific conditions of the Maghreb countries. |
